Everyone’s heard of Charlie Sheen, whether it’s in the news, or because of it two and a Half Men – But do you know his real name and relation to Emilio Estevez?
Charlie Sheen has been a star of TV and film for the past few decades, but not many people have heard of the actor’s real name, Carlos Irwin Estevez. Knowing Charlie Sheen’s real name, it’s pretty easy to see how brothers he and Emilio Estevez are.
Why change his name?
The father of the actors is Ramon Antonio Gerardo Estevez or better known Martin Sheen. Martin Sheen took the stage name early in his career to help him get the acting parts. Using the names of his casting director Robert Del Martin and Archbishop Fulton Jay Sheen, he became known as Martin Sheen.
In 2003 he told Inside the Actors Studio: “Whenever I called for an appointment, whether it was a job or an apartment, and I would give my name, there was always that hesitation and when I got there, he was always gone. So I thought, I should get an acting job. There are a lot of problems trying to get by, so I invented Martin Sheen.”
“It’s still officially Estevez. I never officially changed it. I never will. It’s on my driver’s license and passport and everything. I started using Sheen, I thought I Will try it, and before I knew it, I started making a living with it and by then it was too late. In fact, one of my big regrets is that I didn’t keep my name the way I was given I knew it bothered my dad.”
Martin Sheen’s background stems from his father. Both his parents were immigrants; Although his mother was Irish, his father was Spanish.
Who is Emilio Estevez?
Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen are full brothers. Emilio rose to fame in the 80s in films such as Breakfast Club. Unlike his other siblings, he chose not to adopt his father’s stage name and made a career with his birth name. He is believed to have liked the alliteration of his name and was keen to show his Spanish heritage.
He told Talk Stoop With Nessa: “We were when I started getting into this business.” [he and his father] had that conversation and he said don’t make the same mistake as [his father] did.”
Charlie Sheen’s real name
Although initially using his birth name in amateur films during high school, Charlie Sheen quickly adopted his father’s stage name when his career turned more professional. Deciding to use the Anglo form of his name, Carlos Estevez became Charlie Sheen forever.
In fact, four of his children have also taken names on the stage. Although the actor toyed with returning to his given name in 2013, all of his social media kept his stage name. Perhaps it was too late in his career to change that, just as it was with his father.
