BBC pundits ‘shocked’ by Leeds transfer rumor involving 23-Cap International

Clinton Morrison has claimed Calvin Phillips will not leave Leeds United for Manchester United and is ‘surprised’ that Manchester City want to sign him because they already have Rodri, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport Told.

The former striker said that if Premier League champions knock on the talents of Leeds fans this summer, it would be difficult for Phillips to turn down a club like Manchester City.

It has been well documented that the Whites could lose their hard-hitting midfielder this summer, with many teams eager to bring him in.

Will the people at the Elland Road boardroom cash-in if a big offer is put on the table? Or will they protest and insist on having such an important asset for their club?

Then there’s Phillips himself and how he feels about all of this, if he asks to leave, and he has no clue, it’s not good for the club.

Anyhow, this is what Morrison had to say about Phillips’ future at Leeds and how the 23-cap England international is likely to make the ‘big call’ during these coming weeks.

“I was surprised that they connected with him because they’ve found Rodri,” Morrison said. “I know Calvin Phillips wants to play week in and week out, which he’s doing in Leeds.

“If he went to Manchester City, it would be hard to stop working with one of the best managers and some of the best players in the world.

“But this season, he needs to play regularly to get into that World Cup squad. He will join the World Cup squad and make a regular start for Gareth Southgate. This is a big decision for Philips.

“You say that PSG is also interested in that and there could be a big bidding war. Do I think he will go to Manchester United? I don’t think he will. If it’s either of the two, you go to Manchester City.”

philips call needs to be expedited

If Philips is sold, Leeds needs to get it out the door as quickly as possible, so they can get the money and look for a replacement or replacement.

They can’t afford to let him go for the final few weeks of the summer transfer, otherwise the season would have already started and there would be no pre-season for new faces to settle in.

That was the situation Aston Villa found themselves in last summer when they sold their childhood fan Jack Grealish to Manchester City for £100 million.

It all happened just before the start of the Premier League season, with new signings like Leon Bailey and Danny Ings, they didn’t have the pre-season or time to settle into their new surroundings.

Preparation is absolutely key here, as Leeds, having learned of their injuries last season, looked like a fish out of water when their big names were missing.
